The 2006 Honda Pilot mixes the versatility of a large SUV with the maneuverability of a midsize SUV. It is powered by a powerful V6 and can tow up to 4,500 pounds. Its four-wheel-drive system that means it handles off-roading, too.
The Pilot is a midsize SUV that seats 8 and is available in two trims levels: LX and EX. Front mud flaps, skid plates and a spoiler are among the standard exterior features. Options include a body-colored front bumper with black rub strip, black with chrome surround grille, roof rack and all-wheel drive. Competitors for the Pilot include the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and Acura MDX.
Honda refreshed the Pilot for 2006. This model year has a more rugged exterior design than it’s older siblings. It also has new wheel designs and a more refined interior. A maintenance reminder system and side curtain airbags for all three rows are standard. A front-wheel-drive system is also new.
Changes to the exterior of the 2006 Pilot move it away from being a rugged SUV to a more stately vehicle. Slimmer headlights, a square grille with two horizontal bars and black body cladding give the Pilot a clean design. A squared-off rear end with vertically oriented taillights gives the SUV a boxy silhouette. Contemporary lines that run the entire length of the SUV also help with its move upstream.
The Pilot’s standard features include 16-inch wheels, power side-view mirrors, variable intermittent windshield wipers, a black roofline spoiler and tinted glass as standard. Available features include fog lights, roof rails, automatic headlights and heated side-view mirrors.
It’s easy to mistake the Pilot’s interior for one in a luxury vehicle. Materials are high end. Their fit and finish are on par with competitors’ offerings. The Pilot’s oversized speedometer in the instrument cluster is clear and easy to read. The center console has a straightforward design and is simple to use. Thanks to theater-style seating for the middle row and third row, passengers have clear views out of the front windshield. One downside is that road noise seeps into the cabin. Still, the Honda Pilot offers a comfortable ride.
Standard features include cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows and door locks and a tilt steering wheel. Available features include ambient interior lighting, an eight-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, leather upholstery and heated front seats.
Cargo space with all three rows in place is 15.9 cubic feet. With the third-row rear seats folded, the Pilot has 47.6 cubic feet of cargo space. In total, the Pilot has 87.6 cubic feet of space in its cargo area.
Standard equipment includes a V6 engine with five-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The 3.5-liter engine produces 244 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is available. When properly equipped, the Pilot can tow up to 4,500 pounds.
Fuel economy is rated at up to 16/22 mpg city/highway.
The Pilot is equipped with a strong list of technology. Standard equipment includes a four-speaker audio system, remote keyless entry, cruise control, stability control, side head curtain airbags and four 12-volt power outlets. A 115-volt power outlet, a universal garage door opener, a rear DVD entertainment system, a rearview camera, voice recognition, a navigation system, a seven-speaker audio system, a six-disc CD changer and a 7-inch touchscreen are available.
"This vehicle is a solid vehicle. I purchased it used but it has been well maintained. It has held up well over the years is in good shape. Handles well in bad weather and has plenty of room. Has good towing ability and is versatile with the 3rd row seating which can be filed down for a generous amount of trunk space."
"Best investment I have ever made on a car. Extremely reliable as all Honda’s are. seats 8 passengers. Plenty of leg room, lots of power from the V-6. And 4 wheel drive too. The only draw back is the gas mileage is not great and the road noise can get loud inside at times. Easy to work on too if you care to do your own Maintenance and repairs. I have over 285,000 miles on my pilot and it runs like a champ "
"This Pilot is highly rated for safety. In 2006 I traded a 2002 Cadillac Deville for it & never been sorry. My advise is regular maintenance at the dealership always with the same person if possible. I’m still driving this Pilot & wouldn’t trade it for a new one. "
Ahead is its time for features - Heated seats, DVD player in rear. Can carry up to 8 people.
Loves the style & color. Mine is black.
Almost 200,000 miles & still smooth as silk. Only routiymaintenance & I have done that regularly at the dealership.
Can’t be beat for size of the car. I still get 21-23 mi/gal around town.
"Happy with ours. Was well taken care of before we bought it. Some bells and whistles that actually still work. Seems like a solid little AWD. Fits adults comfortably. Could fit 8 if necessary. Fits kids perfect."
"For this car to be a 2006, it has more of the modern features of today. DVD system, 9" flip down screen, 6 disc changer, volume and heat controls rear. 3 spacious rows, aux hook up for cell phone, all around great car!!!"
The thick craftsmanship and detail of the leather seats
Sporty, small, but very roomy. Slick lines make this car seem endless
Handles curves well, and picks up sipped quickly when it's needed
"We bought this vehicle so that we would have room to haul our kids and their friends around. The pilot was exactly what we were looking for because I wanted the seating room without the bulk of a larger SUV and I wasn't ready for a minivan! I love driving it and its so convenient to have the 3rd row when you need it. The storage space is great I feel like this vehicle was designed for me! I guess according to reviews it was actually designed for someone like me. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I'm not crazy about the exterior I like the exterior of the newer models better. But all in all this is a great car. Haven't had it long so dependability wise I'm not sure yet, but so far it's been great and still runs like a new one." Read Less
