The 2008 Mazda CX-9 combines a relatively sporty suspension and an impressively versatile cabin. That makes the Mazda CX-9 the rare three-row vehicle that can handle the road as well it handles passengers and cargo. The CX-9 can also meet your needs by offering many of the top mainstream comfort features.
The CX-9 is a midsize SUV with standard seating for seven people. Mazda provides Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. The standard powertrain includes a V6 engine that’s new for 2008. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard as well. The CX-9 is also available with all-wheel drive.
Beyond the new power plant, the CX-9 adds blind-spot monitoring as a new option for the 2008 model year.
The 2008 CX-9 looks sleek and low for an SUV, with a flowing roofline instead of the traditional upright appearance. Designers also take an athletic approach up front. The CX-9 has a trim grille and a large intake built into the front bumper. It’s a true sports car look.
Standard features include halogen headlights, LED taillights, stainless steel dual-exhaust outlets, power mirrors, a rear spoiler and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. You can also select options such as xenon high-intensity discharge low beams, halogen fog lights, a power moonroof, a power tailgate, roof rails, 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and heated power mirrors with integrated marker lamps.
Simple but roomy describes the CX-9’s interior. The dashboard has a smooth, clean surface punctuated by the prominent center stack. The 2008 CX-9 also supplies extra third-row legroom and substantive overall cargo space, even compared to some full-size body-on-frame SUVs. This Mazda has a total cargo capacity of 100.7 cubic feet with all of the CX-9’s rear seats folded. There are 48.4 cubic feet of storage space behind the standard 60/40-split folding second row and 17.2 cubic feet behind the 50/50-split folding third row.
Standard features include cloth-trimmed seats, a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. Mazda provides options such as leather-trimmed first- and second-row seats, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat and a leather-wrapped first-row center console.
Mazda ensures the CX-9 lives up to the brand’s “zoom-zoom” reputation with a 3.7-liter V6. That engine produces 273 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, which is 10 more horses and 21 more pound-feet of torque than the CX-9’s 2007 engine. The 2008 CX-9 is also configured with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard equipment. An all-wheel-drive system is optional.
The CX-9 earns fuel economy ratings of 16/22 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive. Upgrade to the optional towing package, and the CX-9 has a trailer rating of 3,500 pounds.
You can thank Mazda engineers for making the CX-9 so fun to drive. They leveraged the same handling expertise that goes into the highly responsive Mazda Miata MX-5.
A six-speaker audio system is standard for the CX-9 with an AMFM stereo, a CD player, an auxiliary input jack and satellite radio. Mazda supplies options like a navigation system, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth for hands-free calling, an 11-speaker Bose audio system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a 9-inch drop-down screen.
