In many respects, the 2017 BMW 3 Series is the definitive compact luxury car. Its handling balances comfort with sporty driving dynamics, and its cabin is a den of premium refinement.
The 2017 BMW 3 Series is available in sedan and wagon configurations, and it seats five passengers. Both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available. Sedans are sold in 320i, 328d, 330i, 330e and 340i trims, while wagons are sold in 330i and 328d trims only.
For 2017, the 3 Series line welcomes a new four-cylinder engine, and the M Sport package — with its sport-tuned suspension and unique steering wheel and exterior trim — is now standard on the 340i. Finally, the lineup of standalone options now includes wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hot spot.
Whether you opt for the sedan or the wagon, the 2017 BMW 3 Series boasts sheet metal that provides a chiseled and sporty look. The brand’s signature bifurcated kidney grille holds a place of prominence on the front fascia, and it’s bordered by sloping halogen headlights. Seventeen-inch wheels with run-flat tires serve as this BMW’s link to the road.
Base 320i models come with halogen free-form front fog lights and power-adjustable manually folding side mirrors. The list of upgrades includes LED headlights, LED fog lights, auto-dimming side mirrors, a sunroof and 18-inch wheels.
The 3 Series comes with a cabin that’s graced with premium materials. Both rows of seating offer decent space for adults. Sedans provide 13 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Wagons offer 17.5 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, and 53 cubic feet with these seats folded.
The base BMW 320i features automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, SensaTec vinyl upholstery and silver matte trim, and front-row passengers enjoy six-way manually adjustable seating. The list of upgrades includes heated front and rear seats, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a heated steering wheel and power-adjustable front seats.
The 2017 BMW 3 Series rewards drivers with sharp reflexes and zippy acceleration. Both an eight-speed automatic transmission and a six-speed manual are available, and all-wheel drive is offered to help you navigate roads choked with snow or rain.
The 320i is motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 180 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, and this power plant has an EPA rating of 23/35 mpg city/highway. With the 330i, you get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine providing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with fuel economy of up to 23/34 mpg.
The 330e is a plug-in hybrid that pairs a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for combined output of 248 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It has an EPA rating of 71 MPGe with the both the gas engine and the electric motor in play, and 30 mpg when running solely on the gasoline engine.
